All you need to know about Talk Like a Pirate Day

By -

Ever since we were kids, we’ve loved pirates. We’re not talking about the real Caribbean pirates of the 16th and 17th century, who were prone to murder, mayhem and syphilis. We’re talking about the pirates you see in movies and children’s books, the pirates who have treasure hunting adventures, walk with peg legs and keep parrots on their shoulders. So it goes without saying that we’re big fans of Talk Like a Pirate Day.

What is Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Talk Like a Pirate Day is an annual parodic holiday celebrated on September 19th. It began in 1995, when two ordinary guys named John Baur and Mark Summers were playing racquetball to shed a few pounds and get healthier.

When one of the pals strained to reach a low shot, he gave out a cry of ‘Arrr!’ From that moment on, their words of encouragement came only in pirate slang. “That be a fine cannonade,” came one friendly reply to a shot. “Now watch as I fire a broadside straight into your yardarm!”

Game over, the pals we’re impressed with how much fun they’d had. They joked about how cool it would be to have a national holiday for talking like pirates. The day would need a seriously-funny spokesperson, noted Baur, someone like Pulitzer Prize-winning humourist Dave Barry.

For seven years, Baur and Summers celebrated Talk Like a Pirate between themselves. And then, by chance, they stumbled across Dave Barry’s email address. Just as they predicted, Barry couldn’t wait to get involved. He helped to turn Talk Like a Pirate Day into a recognised holiday. It’s been celebrated every year since.
